To be consistent, I couldn't advice others to increase the energy efficiency of their houses without showing the example.
So I have made a total renovation of my home dated 1966 to a low energy comsuption bulding (type Minergy-P). The following works had to be carried out :
This way the cost of heating oil has been reduced approximatively by 70%.
- isolate west, north and south facades with a 30 cm-thick mineral isolation material
- isolate the separation between heated and non-heated spaces (for example : basement's ceiling, playroom's walls and floor) with 20 cm of Multipor
- break the balcony thermal bridge (concrete slab sawing and isolation)
- isolate underground walls up to 1 meter
- change windows for triple panes
- create an entrance airlock on the northside
- install a very low temperature floor heating system
- install a breakdown double flow with heat recovery
- build a Canadian well
Improving my home's energy efficiency gives me the same revenue that I would get from investing in a bond at 2,5%. This performance will be reviewed upwards as the energy costs are increasing. Moreover, I benefit from a more confortable home and preserve the environment.
| Energy consumption | |
| Surface of energy reference : | 318 m2 |
| Index calculted energy expediture : | 91 Mj/m2 meaning 25kWh/m2 per year (env. 2.5 l. of heating oil per m2/an) |
| Heating season could be reduced to : | 4.5 months per year. |
